BACKSTORY:
After the crashDave Purse of the band ‘Betika’ wrote the track ‘accident’ several years ago. A snowy journey home on his pushbike inspired a song with a catchy, easy going, melody which contrasted with the disturbing, unnerving lyrics. The video aims to capture the feel of this original idea as well as to build a powerful, yet gentle narration featuring an interesting character. Dave worked hard on the story to ensure that it not only matched his initial idea but also provided strong visuals. Check out the websites below to find out more about the band and also to find out their experiences of making the video.

CAST AND CREWCrash time
The video has Paul Hanford in the central role, as the band was keen not to be seen in the video. Tim Clague filmed and edited the piece.

Paul Miley acted as runner with his daughter Rachel playing the part of the girl.

Jennifer Hayes created the frighteningly realistic make up that meant that the accident could do its task of shocking the audience.

Also thanks to Richard Jenkins for driving the van that Adrian Ward provided and to Glenn Sadler for assisting on the second camera.

Dave Purse continued to be fully involved with the shoot organising the smallest details as well as covering any expenses.

TECHNICAL NOTES:Tall screen
The video was shot on two DVCPro cameras and edited on Media 100. A filter was added in After Effects to give a saturated and high contrast look as well as to add a glow to the whites. The video is presented in ‘tall screen’ with black bars down the side of the screen. This not only fits the ‘shape’ of a man on bike but also is a unique look that means the video is easily identifiable and memorable.

The crash sequence was composited from three images from a locked off camera. These were an empty shot of the crash site, a shot of the actor thrown onto a mattress and a shot of the bike thrown through the air. Composition took place in Commotion.
